How to Renew Your Helper’s Work Permit & Why Maid Insurance Matters More Than You Think

Renewing your domestic helper’s work permit may seem like a routine task—but missing key steps or deadlines can result in costly delays or even legal issues. On top of that, ensuring your helper is properly insured protects both her and your family.

Here’s everything you need to know about renewing your helper’s work permit in Singapore, why maid insurance is not optional, and how Contact Asia can make the process stress-free for you.

Step-by-Step: How to Renew a Maid’s Work Permit

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) typically sends you a renewal notice about 8 weeks before the work permit expires. As the employer, you’re responsible for:

1. Check the Renewal Notice

  • Log in to MOM’s FDW eService using your Singpass
  • Review the renewal eligibility and check if the medical check-up is due

2. Send Your Helper for a 6ME (Medical Examination)

  • This includes pregnancy and infectious disease screening
  • Ensure the check-up is done at an approved clinic before renewal

3. Buy or Renew Maid Insurance and Security Bond

  • This is mandatory. You must show proof of valid insurance for at least 26 monthsbefore you can proceed with the renewal.

4. Submit the Renewal Application

  • Go to MOM’s FDW eService and complete the renewal
  • Pay the renewal fee ($35)
  • You’ll receive an In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter

5. Receive the New Work Permit

  • Once approved, the new work permit will be mailed to your registered address

Maid insurance is more than just a legal requirement—it protects you from hefty financial risks

Why Maid Insurance Is Crucial (Not Just for MOM Compliance)

Maid insurance is more than just a legal requirement—it protects you from hefty financial risks in the event of:

  • Accidents at home or outside
  • Hospitalization due to illness or injury
  • Repatriation costs if your helper is medically unfit to work
  • Wage reimbursement if your helper is unfit for duties for an extended period

Without proper coverage, you could face thousands in out-of-pocket expenses.
